Support You South Africa

Helping you to connect, communicate and thrive in your new context

Being Welcoming - Start Gently

So, you're at a party (see the first post) and you're wanting to connect with someone froxm another country.

This is part 2 of 10 ways to be more effective in interacting with someone from another country

Approach the conversation gently. Be kind, but don't be over-intense. If you have been to a different country where you know minimal language, you will remember just how overwhelming it can potentially be. (It's the empathy thing again!)

In the first minute or so, you cn quickly gauge how much language you have in common. If long sentences and complex concepts are too much, go basic! If that's too much and it's all too awkward, ask to see photos of their family on their phone or in their wallet. Reciprocate with any photos you have.

Previous tip: Kindness goes a long way - further than you think.
Next tip: Use gentle humour but don't embarrass them.
